Racism in Wanganui

June 20, 2007

Today’s Dominion Post (see ‘Patients abuse foreign doctors’ front page) gives details of racism from patients at Wanganui hospital. They include Official Information Act requests to find out the birth places of doctors, racial remarks made to doctors, including one to investigate the practices of all brown-skinned doctors at the hospital. In the worst cases patients have refused treatment from doctors who were born overseas. I hope that the behaviour described above applies to only a small minority of patients. This kind of behaviour is totally and utterly despicable, and deserves condemnation in the strongest possible manner. New Zealand currently has a shortage of doctors, and those overseas ones who immigrate here preform a very valuable service to New Zealanders. Long may they continue to make New Zealand a better and healthier place.
